Review of the Laboratory Quality Assurance Programme
A seminar on "How to complete the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death" was conducted.
A training workshop on the principles and practice of outbreak investigation and management was conducted.
Technical assistance was provided for an investigation into a suspected outbreak of Leptospirosis.

BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS

Needs assessment for the implementation of the CATIN

Participation at a "Breakfast with the media" session to familiarise senior journalists about the wider issues in health and development – PAHO/WHO/CARICOM
Advocacy workshop for the media on HIV/AIDS prevention and control
Evaluation of the HIV testing capabilities in support of the Voluntary counselling and testing and the Mother-to-child Transmission of HIV infection programme
Needs assessment for the implementation of the CATIN was conducted.

Training in identification of malaria parasites and performance of indirect fluorescent antibody test for Malaria was conducted.

Funds were mobilised and arrangements made for one (1) member of staff of the Ministry of Health to participate in a Tuberculosis Clinical Programme at the National Tuberculosis Centre, Newark, New Jersey, USA.
The mortality database was reviewed, and an orientation for medical staff on mortality coding and ICD-10 was conducted.

JAMAICA

Joint progress review CAREC/CIDA.
Attendance at a meeting for the development of the regional strategic plan for HIV/AIDS.
Training in the preparation for the Caribbean Invasive Bacterial Surveillance Programme (IBIS) and demonstration of laboratory techniques for the implementation of H. influenzae and S. pneumoniae.
Appraisal mission with consultants re: EU Project "Strengthening of Medical Laboratory Services in the Caribbean, Haiti and Dominican Republic.
Review of Laboratory procedures in the Immunology laboratory of the NPHL, with special emphasis on Quality Assurance practices.
An evaluation of a hospital-based injury surveillance system was undertaken
An evaluation of the Leprosy Control Programme was undertaken.
Ten computers, printers and accompanying equipment were made available to the private physicians who are members of the Caribbean College of Family Physicians (CCFP), as part of the Physician Based Sentinel Surveillance (PBSS) Project.
Two sensitisation and training workshops were convened for the participants of the Physician Based Sentinel Surveillance (PBSS) Project.

MONTSERRAT

Level 2 training in the Applications in Health Information Management Workshop was conducted.

NETHERLANDS ANTILLES
(Curacao/Bonaire/St. Maarten/Saba/St. Eustatius)

Presentation at CASMET Biennial General Meeting on Quality Assurance in Caribbean Laboratories (Curacao).
Orientation visit of CAREC team.
A multi-disciplinary team consisting of staff from CAREC’s Laboratory and Epidemiology Divisions had an orientation visit to a new member country, the Netherlands Antilles.

ST. KITTS AND NEVIS

Support to NAP for attendance at CATIN meeting.
Assist the Ministry of Health with the development of the National Plan for an expanded response to HIV/AIDS.
Attendance to the Launching of the strategic initiative on HIV/AIDS on World AIDS Days, 1999.

ST. LUCIA

Participation in the Diploma Course in Health Informatics.
A Level 2 training in the Applications in Health Information Management Workshop was conducted, and project presentations were evaluated.

SURINAME

Joint progress review CAREC/GTZ.
Training in access programming provided.
Discussions were held with Ministry of Health personnel regarding surveillance priorities for Emerging Infectious Diseases, as part of a new French Technical Cooperation (FTC) initiative.

TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO

Organise and facilitate for participants from 11 CMCs to attend Blood Bank Meeting.
Media workshop — Training journalist in being more sensitive to HIV/AIDS issues.
Provide technical and financial support to "Life after School Fairs" — TOBAGO.
Joint progress review CAREC/GTZ — TOBAGO.
To conduct a laboratory evaluation and a Quality Assurance Workshop — TOBAGO.
Follow-up to Quality Assurance workshop — monitoring and planning for further implementation — TOBAGO.
Assistance provided to the Ministry of Health to assess the existing infrastructure for Medical Informatics.
Assistance with Lectures on Vector Controls — Port of Spain Health Corporation.
Assistance in the preparation for Caribbean Invasive Bacterial Surveillance Programme.
Funds were mobilised and arrangements made for one (1) member of staff of the Ministry of Health to participate in a Tuberculosis Clinical Programme at the National Tuberculosis Centre, Newark, New Jersey, USA.
Coordination was provided for the Workshop on Nosocomial Infection Control for Registered Nurses, in collaboration with the Trinidad and Tobago Registered Nurses’ Association.
Staff from the National Cancer Registry and the National Surveillance Unit were trained in the use of EpiInfo as a tool for conducting data analyses and producing reports.
Technical and financial assistance was provided for staff at the National Surveillance Unit in the editing and analysis of data and the production of HIV/AIDS reports. HIV/AIDS reports.
Technical and financial assistance was provided for the conduct of a workshop entitled "HIV/AIDS Surveillance in decentralised environment".

A Customer survey on laboratory services was conducted.
Evaluation of the current HIV Diagnostic operations
Continuation of on-going programme to strengthen Microbiology capability, including training in specimen management and processing of body fluids. Advice given on the establishment of another facility to improve Microbiology services.

REGIONAL

Support for eleven (11) CMCs to attend the Regional Meeting of the NAP Coordinators.
Support for panellists on CAREC/CBU 90-minute live interactive television Programme "Listen, Learn, Live", for World AIDS Day 1999.
